7 things, you should experience in summer in the Salzburger Sportwelt

At last! After a long and snow-filled winter my favourite time of year – summer – is just around the corner! I personally just love travelling and am always looking out for new and interesting countries and special places to visit – and a very special place my world traveller’s heart was able to explore from an early age, is in fact my home – the Salzburger Pongau.

Here are 7 things that make the Salzburger Sportwelt so special for me and therefore should feature on your to-do list:

  1. Time for an adrenalin boost – mountain go-karting in Flachau

You’re a person with “zest for life” and you don’t want to miss out on an adventure whilst on holiday? Then you should head for Flachau. On the mountain cart tour you head up wards comfortably on the bus, where a short introduction awaits your group.  Whilst the first run down is somewhat gentle, as the guide explains all the key passages, you can thereafter determine your speed yourself and whizz down the run to the valley at a faster pace. Once back down in the valley a number of other exciting fun sports await you – it’s worth taking a look at the online activity planner.

  • Guided tour, takes place daily in the summer high season (also on rainy days, with special rain protection)
  • Price: € 39,00 per person
  • Booking required; either using the online activity planner, at the Sports and Activity Centre or directly with the organiser Sport am Jet, tel. +43 (0) 6457 2090
  • Further information available from the Flachau Tourismus +43 (0) 6457 2214
  1. On a high note: music up at the alpine huts in Wagrain-Kleinarl

Behind every favourite song there’s bound to be a story – why not discover a new (traditional) favourite “song”, which in years to come will remind you of your holiday and the great hikes in Salzburger Sportwelt at the “Music at the Alpine Huts“ (every Wednesday from 12:00 to 3:00 pm) in Wagrain-Kleinar?
Doesn’t just sound good – tastes good too! As in addition to traditional live music a wealth of regional, culinary delicacies await visitors – mhhhh!

  • Guided hikes every Wednesday at 9:30 am
  • Price: € 12,00 per person or € 8,00 per person with the Salzburger Sportwelt Card or free of charge with the Wagrain-Kleinarl guest card; lift tickets and food & drink at the alpine huts not included.
  • Sturdy hiking boots, sun protection, drink, head covering and rainwear recommended.
  • Further information from the Wagrain-Kleinarl Tourismus +43 (0) 6413 8448 or tel. +43 (0) 6418 206
  1. Where children’s hearts beat faster: the JoKiWo in St. Johann in Salzburg

According to the motto “heartily friendly“ the JoKiWo (St. Johann Kids’ Week) takes place this year for the first time in St. Johann in Salzburg. From 13th to 19th July 2019 above all the youngest guests can look forward to a varied activity programme, including a performance of “Peter and the Wolf“ by the Philharmonic  Salzburg, the talented storyteller, Max Steiner, who bewitches the children with his fairy tales on the Ghost Mountain, a puppet theatre in the Town Park and a shopping day for families, all of which guarantee to make the heart of every child, and of course their parents, beat faster.

  • Programme:
Peter and the Wolf – Sunday, 14th July 2019, from 11:00 am in the Culture and Congress House Storyteller on the mountain – Tuesday, 16th July 2019, from 11:00 am on the Ghost Mountain
Puppet Theatre – Thursday, 18th July 2019, from 5:00 pm in the Town Park Pavillon
Shopping day for families  – Friday, July 2019, all day

  1. Now it’s getting colourful: The 29th Arts & Crafts Market in Radstadt

The Radstadt Arts & Crafts Market counts amongst one of the most important arts & crafts markets in Austria and entices numerous artisans, handicraft experts and designers to the historic old town every year on the first weekend in September. In addition to a colourful selection of unique handicrafts made of glass, wool, felt and wooden you’ll also find imaginative and original street theatre, walking acts, ring games and a variety of street musicians. A great tip, therefore, for all those looking for inspiration, entertainment and good food!

  1. Where your holiday “tastes“ best: culinary get-togethers in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee

Last year as part of our colleauges’ get-together we ourselves took part in the culinary walk, and I can therefore personally recommend the culinary get-togethers in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. Incorporated into a gentle walk through the town or a speedy e-bike tour in Altenmarkt’s mountains, you not only get to know the resort from all sides, but you can also look forward to tasty starters, main courses and desserts at the different refreshment stops along the way. And who knows, sometimes at (culinary) get-togethers, new acquaintances or even friends can be found.

  • Culinary walks every Wednesday at 5:00 pm
  • Culinary 3Mountains.Tour by e-bike every Thursday at 11:00 am
  • Price: € 40,00 per adult (16 years and over) & € 20,00 per child (6 years and over)
  • Further information from the Altenmarkt-Zauchensee Tourist Office, tel. +43 (0) 6452 5511
  1. Just crying out for summer: The KITIWAPF summer festival in Eben im Pongau

The new KITIWAPF (Kinder (kids) – Tiere (animals) – Wanderpfad (hiking trail)) in Eben im Pongau counts as the hiking insider tip for the whole family. On the way up to the Moosalm in Altenmarkt/Eben there are not just lots of curious animals to be found, whose (stamp) trail you have to collect along the length of the gentle walk. Afterwards with their full stamp booklets and solved adventure puzzle, young (and old) can look forward to a small surprise at the Moosalm.

To officially open the new themed path this year there’s a KITIWAPF Summer Festival, a playful family hiking day with get-together at the Moosalm. Deer, eagle, fox and co. certainly look forward to lots of little – and of course bigger – hikers.

  • Open daily from the end of May until October
  • Walking time approx. 1 hours to 1.5 hrs.
  • KITIWAPF Summer Festival: Sunday, 14th July 2019, from 11:00 pm
  • Free admission
  • Further information from the Tourist Office in Eben im Pongau, tel. +43 (0) 6458 8194

Those wishing to say “bye bye“ to their worries and are looking for new strength and positive energy, have come to the right place as here in Filzmoos there are lots of power spots – 17 in total. Accompanied by specially qualified guides you have the opportunity to hike to these very special energy-laden spots and during meditation find your inner peace.

Born and bred in Salzburg, mountains, traditional customs, culinary specialities have accompanied me my whole life. The older I get and the more cultures and landscapes of other countries I get to know, the more I realise, how beautiful it really is here. That's why I particularly enjoy sharing these special characteristics of my home with you in the blogHuette.
